Welcome to the Instructor Section for the Companion Website to James Lester's Writing Research Papers, 11th edition. If you have used the previous companion site, we invite you back to this revised site. If you are new to the site, welcome.
This site is designed with your writing students in mind. It has been structured
in a way that allows you to be very flexible in how you have your students use
the site. Each section of the companion site corresponds to a particular chapter
from the text and within each section you will find several modules that address
critical areas for the student researcher/writer. It will be easy for you to
assign students to use part or all of the site as they are working with a chapter
of the text. You can require that students do all or some of the activities,
take all or some of the quizzes, or you can simply refer students to the companion
site for more information on a topic they may be struggling with or need more
information on than is available in the textbook itself. You will find the following
modules in the student section of the companion site:
- Highlights
This module introduces students to what can be found in a particular chapter's
companion website section. - Activities and Quizzes
For each activity and quiz, you will have the option for your students to
submit the work to either you or a teaching assistant. Activities ask students
to put into practice what a chapter of the text and section of the companion
site ask them to learn, and quizzes are designed to direct students to particularly
crucial pieces of information from each section. - On the Web
This module contains links to online resources for students, including links
to online writing centers, research resources, or activity sites. - Evaluation Strategies and Cautions
While the Web is full of amazing information that can help your students conduct
successful research, so it is full of information that is suspect in nature.
These tips and techniques will help them navigate the Web in a more critical
way. - Sample Searches
To better illustrate how students can use the World Wide Web for research,
this module takes them step-by-step through sample searches using search engines,
online libraries and archives, and other information databases. - Student Samples
Here you will find examples from composition students. The work here represents
a range of pieces of writing, including basic introductions and sophisticated
electronic writing projects.
