Lab Activities
Lab Activity 2: Audience and Purpose

Objective To write with a purpose for an audience.

Step 1: Suppose a friend of yours is moving to your area and would like to know what it is like to live in your neighborhood. Write a letter in response. Focus on three main points about your area—cost of living, whether someone needs a car to get around, average age of neighbors, to name some—and give three details in support of each point. Keep in mind your overall purpose in writing to your friend, such as persuading him or her to move near you (or to stay away).

Overall purpose: Convince my friend that this area is a good place to live.
