Lab Activity 5: Drafting: Writing a Rough Draft

Objective To practice using the writing process by writing a rough draft.

Step 1: Think about an experience you know of in which health care made a difference in someone's life. The experience could be your own, that of someone you know, or fictional. Use one of the prewriting strategies from Chapter 4 to come up with some details on the topic.


		Your prewriting: To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		*Step 2:* Now, write a preliminary thesis statement for a short essay on the topic about which you did prewriting. You don't have to worry about getting the thesis statement perfect; you just need to start focusing your thoughts by giving a thesis statement a first attempt. An example has been done for you. Example of a draft thesis statement: I am taking a course in first aid so I can join my town's volunteer ambulance corps. Your draft thesis statement: To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		*Step 3:* Now, use your prewriting from Step 1 and your draft thesis statement from Step 2 to write a rough draft of one paragraph for a short essay on the topic you've selected. Don't worry about writing clearly or correctly at this point. You can revise your work later. 		*Step 4:* Next, refer to the prewriting, draft thesis statement, and rough draft paragraph you did in Steps 1 through 3. Write an additional rough draft paragraph for your essay on an experience you know of in which health care made a difference in someone's life. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		*Step 5:* Finally, write a third rough draft paragraph, or more if you like, to finish your rough draft essay on an experience you know of in which health care made a difference in someone's life.
