Lab Activity 10: Organizing and Linking Ideas
 
Objective To practice organizing and linking the ideas in your essay.

Step 1: For each item below, choose chronological order, emphatic order, or spatial order as a logical way of organizing an essay about the topic. Then, write a possible thesis statement for an essay on the topic. Remember to include a map in your thesis statement. An example has been done for you.

Example:
Topic: Effects on children of violence on TV
Type of order: Emphatic
Possible thesis statement: Studies have shown that seeing violence on TV may make children less sensitive to the pain of others, more fearful of their environment, and more likely to act aggressively toward others.

Step 2: Read each paragraph below and follow the directions.

The United States is not the only country that can speak of outlaws. In 1963, one of the biggest robberies of all time occurred near London, England. A gang of about twenty men robbed a mail train of A32.3 million; in today's terms, this would be about $70 million. ______ the heist occurred, some gang members bought some blue railway maintenance overalls. Wearing these would allow the robbers to be unnoticed on the railway line. ______, Roy James, the gang's getaway driver, researched how the train's engines worked by pretending he was a teacher planning a lesson. The gang originally planned the robbery for June 1963, but they decided to wait until August to take advantage of the extra money a bank holiday would bring in. ______ August 8, 1963, they were set to pull it off.
