Lab Activity 11: Sensitive Language
 
Objective To practice recognizing and avoiding insensitive language.

Step 1: In each item below, write two sentences as instructed about the topic given. You may refer to Chapter 11. An example has been done for you.

Example:
Write a sentence about people who send "spam," or unsolicited e-mail advertisements, to you.
Using insensitive language: The boys who are sending me all that spam ought to go straight to jail.
Avoiding insensitive language: The people who are sending me all that spam ought to go straight to jail.

      Step 3: For each item below, select the choice that avoids insensitive language. If the original sentence avoids insensitive language, select "No change."

1. As I was driving to the hockey game, a guy cut right in front of me from the next lane, then sped up so fast I never even saw what he looked like. [Hint]

 
 
 
 


      2. This wild driver, probably a teenager, didn't even bother to signal. 

 
 
 
 


      3. His dented, sputtering car revealed the neighborhood he probably came from.
