Lab Activity 15: Varying Your Sentences

Objective To vary your sentences.

Step 1: Extend the following sentences using coordination or subordination. The conjunction gives a hint as to how you should extend the sentence. An example has been done for you.

Example:
Coordination—yet: Some people love mystery stories.
Some people love mystery stories, yet others can't stand being left in the dark until the end of the tale.
Subordination—if: I can't put a good mystery down.
I can't put a good mystery down if it catches my interest from the beginning.


		1. Coordination—but: William has volunteered to cook dinner for us this evening. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		2.Subordination—although: Our lacrosse team can still win most of its games. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		3. Coordination—and: I usually drive right at the speed limit. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		4. Subordination—before: I want to be sure you are able to do this work properly. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		*Step 2:* Now, select the topic of one of the sentences you wrote in Step 1. Write a paragraph of at least five sentences about that topic. In your paragraph, use coordination at least twice and subordination at least twice. After you finish, check your paragraph to make sure you used coordination and subordination correctly. 		*Step 4:* Now that you have practiced recognizing coordination and subordination, think about a writer, artist, musician, or athlete whose talent is mostly unrecognized (or recognized too much). Write a paragraph of at least five sentences explaining why you feel the way you do about that writer, artist, musician, or athlete. In your paragraph, use coordination at least twice and subordination at least twice. After you finish, check your paragraph to make sure you used coordination and subordination correctly and that you varied your sentences to make the paragraph interesting to read.
