'Several factors make the English Channel the world's most difficult swim!'
The success rate for solo swims of the English Channel is less than 50 percent in a typical season. There are several factors that combine to make this the world's hardest swim.
To begin with, the English Channel is about nineteen nautical miles wide at its narrowest point, and most swims are a little longer to reach land on either side. Every swimmer must contend with strong tides that change direction every six hours. These tides can flow as fast as four nautical miles per hour. Most swimmers try to make the attempt during neap tides, when the rates of flow and heights of the tides are lowest.
In addition, the weather can change very quickly on the Channel. Combining the changeable wind and powerful tide, the swimmer can come up against some severe and sudden changes in sea conditions. In general, the stronger the wind and tide, the rougher are sea conditions. On top of all this, there are more than six hundred commercial ship movements every day in the middle of the Channel. There are also more than eighty ferry crossings every twenty-four hours. The swimmer must travel directly across the shipping lanes, and it is the swimmer's (and the swimmer's managers) who are responsible for avoiding the commercial shipping. Add to these factors a good portion of mental tension, and you have what many call "the Everest of open-water swimming."
