Lab Activity 19: Describing a Scene, a Person, or an Object

Objective To practice writing a descriptive essay.

Step 1: Three of the five senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing) are listed below for each of the given topics. For each sense specified, write down three descriptive details.

Example:
Your favorite uncle
Sight:
Intellectual look, with a full beard and a bald, shiny head
Slim and wiry build like a wrestler
Squinty eyes that always appear to be asking a question

Touch:
Fingernails that are long, sharp, and usually, but not always, clean
Oversized T-shirt and baggy pants that make it seem as though there's nobody inside his clothes.
Pointy, angular elbows that dig into opponents during a basketball game

Hearing:
A loud, gravelly voice something like a foghorn
Heavy pounding footsteps that announce his presence before he actually appears
Sings softly, smoothly, and passionately, as if he's dreaming
