Lab Activity 29: Writing to Get a Job

Objective To practice writing a cover letter and a résumé.

Step 1: Think of the job of your dreams, the job you would love to have if you were qualified for it. You could look for ideas in your local newspaper, a magazine, or a job search Web site such as Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, or Jobs.com. For this practice, don't worry if you do not have the experience or qualifications for that job.

		*Step 2:* Write a "dream" résumé for the job you would love to have. Remember that in your actual ésumé, you should always be honest in listing your experience or qualifications. However, for this exercise, pretend that you have the necessary qualifications for the job you'd love, and include them here in your fictional résumé. 		*Step 4: Review the dream résumé you wrote in Step 2. Now, write the heading for a dream cover letter to accompany your résumé in attempting to get the job you would love to have. Remember to include your return address, the name and address of your recipient (you will have to make this up), and your polite greeting.
