Lab Activity 34: Clauses

Objective To identify and write clauses.

Step 1: For each of the following items, use the italicized word to write the required sentence in the space.

Example:
Write a sentence using potatoes in a dependent clause.
After you boil the potatoes, mash them thoroughly.


		1. Write a sentence using book in an independent clause. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		2. Write a sentence using clock in a phrase. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		3. Write a simple sentence using exercise. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		4. Write a complex sentence using friendship. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		5. Write a compound sentence using class. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		*Step 2:* Now, select one of the sentences you wrote in Step 1. Write a paragraph of at least five sentences using the topic of that sentence. In your paragraph, identify each word group as a phrase (P), independent clause (IC), or dependent clause (DC). 		*Step 3:* For each sentence below, choose the term that correctly describes the italicized word group. 1. People first cultivated the potato in the Andes mountain range. [Hint]

		2. This area is now made up of the countries Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. [Hint]

		3. Although the people in that area once grew about 200 different varieties of potatoes, we grow only a few varieties today. [Hint]

		4. Many people believe that the sweet potato is a type of potato, but the two are hardly related at all. [Hint]

		5. The edible part of the potato plant is the tuber. [Hint]

		6. In the case of the potato plant, the tuber is grown underground. [Hint]

		*Step 4:* Now that you have practiced identifying clauses, choose something you like (or don't like) to eat and write a paragraph of at least five sentences describing how you feel about it. In your paragraph, identify each word group as a phrase (P), independent clause (IC), or dependent clause (DC).
