Lab Activity 35: Correcting Run-On Sentences
 
Objective To identify thesis statements and develop support points and specific details.

Step 1: For each of the following items, use the italicized word group to write the required compound or complex sentence. Be sure to avoid writing run-on sentences.

Example: Use a strong person in a complex sentence
We know Rosa Parks was a strong person because what she did required courage.

      Step 3: For each sentence below, select the choice that corrects the run-on. If the original sentence is correct, select "No change."

1. Martin Luther King became the minister of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church at the age of twenty-six he had little intention of becoming a civil rights leader. [Hint]



      2. He had just completed his doctorate in systematic theology at Boston University, he had met and married Coretta Scott there. [Hint]



      3. His preference at the time was to become a university professor he was also asked to become his father's assistant, his father was the minister at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. [Hint]



      4. King quickly became known as an eloquent speaker, he was asked to be the president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). [Hint]



      5. He turned down the presidency. He felt overwhelmed beginning a career at the same time his wife was pregnant with their first child. [Hint]



      6. He did accept the presidency of the Montgomery Improvement Association this group was formed to lead the Montgomery bus boycott. [Hint]



      7. Two months into the boycott, King was receiving thirty to forty letters of hate mail a day, on January 30, 1956, a bomb destroyed the porch of his home. [Hint]



      8. Luckily, King's wife and child were not hurt he later acknowledged that he felt fear at this time. [Hint]



      9. It was during the bus boycott that King found the inner strength to fight on with his skill and eloquence, he became a leader of the civil rights movement. [Hint]



      10. King's courage sustained him through the years of the struggle for civil rights, although he never gave up his longing to lead a full, normal life. [Hint]
