Lab Activity 41: Pronoun Types
 
ObjectiveTo practice correctly recognizing and using pronouns.

Step 1: In each item below, write a sentence as instructed. After you finish, check to make sure you are using the correct pronouns. You may refer to Chapter 41.

Example:
Write a sentence using the pronouns they and themselves.
They have themselves to blame for not practicing enough for the contest.
Example:
Write a sentence using the pronouns this and his.
Jeff likes to work with cars, so this part of the project is his.

      Step 3: For each sentence below, select the choice that uses the italicized pronoun correctly. If the original sentence is correct, select "No change."

1. I once wrote a column of detective stories for a local newspaper, and it kept myself occupied for a few years. [Hint]



      2. My stories' detectives always nabbed its prey, but at times they were sloppy. [Hint]



      3. One story was about a brilliant blackjack player who infuriated casino owners because he was better at the game than them. [Hint]



      4. The casino owners threw out the player whenever they saw him, but what was especially irritating about him was that he was also an expert at disguising himself. [Hint]



      5. My fictional detective, Christina Donnell, first lured the master card player to a World Series of Blackjack that she staged just for his purpose. [Hint]



      6. Then Christina figured out a way to recognize the card player no matter how he was disguised; it was her who broke into his room while he was asleep and secretly implanted a homing device in his thigh. [Hint]



      7. As you may now realize, these detectives of myself didn't worry too much about breaking the law, as long as they didn't get caught. [Hint]



      8. In one of my stories, the detective hisself ended up to be the guilty party, even though he hadn't intended to break the law. [Hint]



      9. Christina Donnell's toughest case called for her to work for the wife of the U.S. president; this was not a time when she could break the law. [Hint]



      10. Eventually I stopped writing my column because his characters began to have too many imperfections for my idealistic image of myself. [Hint]
