Lab Activity 47: Apostrophes

Objective To practice recognizing the correct use of apostrophes and using apostrophes correctly.

Step 1: In each item below, write a sentence as instructed. You may refer to Chapter 47.

Example:
Write a sentence using the contraction for you would.
In the military, you'd learn to follow orders carefully.

Example:
Write a sentence using the word lights to show possession or ownership.
These lights' strength makes the room too bright.


		1. Write a sentence using the contraction for are not. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		2. Write a sentence using the contraction for it is. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		3. Write a sentence using the contraction for they are. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		4. Write a sentence using the word father to show possession or ownership. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		5. Write a sentence using the word houses to show possession or ownership. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		*Step 2:* Now, select the topic of one of the sentences you wrote in Step 1. Write a paragraph of at least five sentences using that topic. In your paragraph, include at least four different contractions and four different uses of apostrophes to show possession or ownership. After you finish, check to make sure you used your apostrophes correctly, and fix any errors you find. To create paragraphs in your essay response, type <p> at the beginning of the paragraph, and </p> at the end.

		*Step 4: Now that you have practiced recognizing the correct use of apostrophes, think about an important military victory or loss in history, such as the Allies' victory in World War II, Napoleon's loss at Waterloo, or the North's prevailing in the American Civil War. Then, imagine the results if the outcome of that victory or loss were reversed, for example, if the South had won the Civil War. Next, write a paragraph of at least five sentences about the reversed outcome you imagine. In your paragraph, include at least four different contractions and four different uses of apostrophes to show possession or ownership. After you finish, check your paragraph for correct usage of apostrophes, and make any necessary revisions. You may refer to the apostrophe usage information in Chapter 47.
