Lab Activity 48: Quotation Marks
 
Objective To practice recognizing the correct use of quotation marks and using quotation marks correctly.

Step 1: Below, use the elements to write a correct sentence in the space provided. You may refer to Chapter 48.

Example:
Elements to Use: Direct quotation with said the mayor in the middle.
Sentence: "If we don't rebuild our town hall soon," said the mayor, "it will be extremely expensive to rebuild it in the future."
Example:
Elements to Use: Use part of this quotation: "Denial ain't yet a river in Egypt," said Mark Twain.
Sentence: Mark Twain emphasizes the significance of "denial" when he says it "ain't yet a river in Egypt."

      Step 3: For each word group that follows, select the choice that uses quotation marks correctly. If the original word group is correct, select "No change."

1. Few people have heard of what Mark Twain considered his greatest work, a historical novel titled "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc." [Hint]



      2. The book was published in installments in Harper's Magazine from April 1895 to April 1896. [Hint]

      10. My friend recently quoted Twain when he said the people campaigning for senator here remind me of Mark Twain's saying, "Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to." [Hint]
