About the Series

The Resource series offers three books that cover the full range of developmental writing needs. The first book in the series Sentence Resources for Writers leads students toward sentence-level and paragraph mastery. The second book, Resources for Writers, focuses on paragraph development. The final book in the series, College Resources for Writers, offers extensive instruction and practice in writing essays.

The three books share key features including:

  • Modular text format. This format provides opportunities for lessons and assignments within a single chapter but also allows for connections between chapters.
  • Lab Manual and Lab Manual Online. Each book in the series includes a bound-in lab manual that provides reinforcement activities for each chapter. In addition, there is a corresponding online lab manual for each chapter offering additional practice lessons.
  • Cultural Literacy themes. To help students master basic cultural literacy, each chapter is organized around a cultural literacy theme from topics such as food and roller coasters to more academic topics grounded in history, literature, and political science. Sample sentences, paragraphs, and essay as well as exercises revolve around these themes, so students can see concepts illustrated with real subject matter not just fictionalized or overly personalized material.
  • Four Cs of Writing. All the books use a simple mnemonic device to help students remember their writing. These terms are: concise, credible, clear, and correct. This concept is completely integrated into the texts, examples, and exercises so that students learn how to check their work for the elements of good writing at every stage of development. Graphics and checklists reinforce the Four Cs and provide ready reference for students.
  • Readings. Each book comes with high interest readings in a range of styles, patterns of development, and subject matter.
