Lab Activity 13: Choosing the Best Words
 
 
Objective: To avoid using slang, clichés, and overly formal language.

Step 3: Select a more appropriate expression to replace the underlined word or phrase.


      1. Back in the day, movie tickets cost only five dollars. 

 
 
 


      2. In this day and age, movie tickets can cost as much as ten or twelve dollars. 

 
 
 


      3. What's up with that? 

 
 
 


      4. Needless to say, movies are more expensive to make now. 

 
 
 


      5. And actors' salaries seem to reach for the stars

 
 
 


      6. However, it doesn't seem fair for big movie studios to try to make ends meet by overcharging the public. 

 
 
 


      7. It just seems as if the high-ticket prices are a way of dissing the public. 

 
 
 


      8. It dawned on me that I could avoid the high ticket prices by waiting for the movie to come out on DVD. 

 
 
 


      9. But my friends started riding me about being cheap. 

 
 
 


      10. So I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and pay the high prices.
