Lab Activity 23: Errors in Parallelism

Objective: To practice recognizing and correcting errors in parallelism, as well as writing parallel sentences.

Step 3: For each of the sentences below, select the choice that has a parallel structure. If the original sentence already has a parallel structure, select "no change."

      1. Satellites give us plenty of information about human activities, and they add to our knowledge about birds, too.

      2. Satellite data helps us track the migration patterns of some birds, and we learn more about the birds' habitats in the process.

      3. To track any animal on the ground or in the air, scientists strap a tiny radio transmitter to the animal, the bird, or a fish as well.

      4. A researcher places the transmitter inside a harness; the next step is that someone has to fasten the harness to the bird's body.

      5. The harness is custom-designed for the specific species that wears it; both that, and it is fitted by hand as well to make sure the bird is comfortable.

      6. The transmitter collects data from the bird; then it links the data to a signal and sends the signal up to an orbiting satellite.

      7. As the satellite passes above the bird's location, the satellite receives and stores the data; when the satellite goes over a ground station, it sends the data to the station.

      8. A satellite measures the speed at which it approaches the transmitter, the ground station collects several speed measurements, and the station calculates the location of the bird.

      9. The location of the bird can be determined, the temperature around it can sometimes be calculated, too.

      10. Colder temperatures slow the chemical reactions in the transmitter's battery, which lowers the voltage level of the battery, and the voltage measurement helps indicate the temperature.

To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.

Answer choices in this exercise are randomized and will appear in a different order each time the page is loaded.
