Lab Activity 34: Sentence Combining 4
 
Objective: To practice combining sentences using possessives, indirect quotations, and lead-ins to quotations.

Step 3: For each of the groups of sentences below, select the choice that correctly combines the sentences using possessives, indirect quotations, or lead-ins to quotations.


      1. Yogi Berra had a statement about the value of money.

The statement was "A nickel isn't worth a dime today." 



      2. Once, Berra was told he looked cool.

He said, "Thanks, you don't look so hot yourself."  



      3. My friend Courtney just told me a Berra statement I hadn't heard before.

The statement was, "If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be."  



      4. My dad has a favorite Berra saying.

The saying is, "The future ain't what it used to be."  



      5. Dad has an opinion about that saying.

Dad feels that Berra packed a lot of meaning into a memorable phrase.  



      6. Berra once said a statement that I wish I had been able to say.

Berra said, "I usually take a two-hour nap from one to four."  



      7. Berra was discussing a movie starring the actor Steve McQueen, who died several years ago.

Berra said, "He must have made that before he died."  



      8. There's another Berra statement that says a lot.

The statement is, "Why buy good luggage? You only use it when you travel."  



      9. Berra even had a memorable quote about funerals.

His statement about funerals was, "You should always go to other people's funerals; otherwise, they won't come to yours."  



      10. Somebody once told Berra, "Hey, Yogi, I think we're lost."

Berra's reply was, "Yeah, but we're making great time!"
