The two comprehensive, 50-question diagnostics available here are interchangeable; both test the same skills and competencies. You may choose to take either one as an initial evaluation of your proficiency, or you may choose to take one as an initial evaluation and the second after you have completed ExerciseZone practice sets in areas of identified weakness. These diagnostics are based on research studies that identify (1) the most common errors that student writers make, and (2) those errors that instructors suggest most interfere with comprehension. The diagnostics do not test every possible kind of error, but instead test errors identified in these research studies.
The results page generated by these diagnostics will provide two kinds of information: (1) general proficiency levels in four categories (basic grammar, sentence grammar, punctuation and mechanics, and usage and style); and (2) individual question-by-question feedback. These results should be printed out, since when you leave the results page, the page will disappear. These results may also be e-mailed to your instructor.
Based on the results of your diagnostic, you will be able to link to further practice in ExerciseZone, or topic explanations in the online Handbook.
