Revising Sexist language

Sexist language contains stereotypes or unfair assumptions about males or females. Always avoid using it, choosing instead to use language that accommodates both sexes. Here is an example of sexist language. It makes the assumption that all secretaries are women.

Every secretary may invite her husband to the office party.

There are several ways to avoid sexist language. Study the following methods of revising this sentence:

1. Use plural nouns and pronouns: Secretaries may invite their spouses.
2. Replace the troublesome pronoun: Every secretary may invite a friend or spouse.
3. Use masculine and feminine pronouns: Every secretary may invite his or her spouse.
