Coordinating Ideas and Structures

In a sentence, elements are coordinate when they are equal to each other and presented as equal to each other.

Words, phrases, or clauses can be coordinate structures, as demonstrated in the examples below:

Coordinate Words:

Buying insurance for your car, home, or health is expensive.

Coordinate Phrases:

Finding an agent and applying for insurance may be time-consuming.

Coordinate Clauses:

Because accidents are expensive and because thefts occur frequently, insurance is expensive.

Coordination gives equal emphasis to ideas. It also strongly implies that ideas are parallel to one another. When you want two ideas to get equal emphasis or to show that they are parallel, phrase them in matching (coordinated) words, phrases, or clauses.
