Correcting Illogical Coordination

Illogical coordination occurs when ideas that are not equally important or are not parallel are emphasized equally. In these examples, equal and parallel ideas are coordinated:

Jacob has to budget his money carefully, and he has to budget his time carefully, too.
Jacob’s rent is exorbitant, and his insurance payments are high.

However, in the following example the ideas are not equal and parallel:

Jacob has to budget his money carefully, and his insurance payments are high.

Jacob’s need to budget and the fact that his payments are high are not related in a way that the word and expresses well. Either of these edited versions would be better:

Jacob has to budget his money carefully, because his insurance payments are high.
Jacob’s insurance payments are high; as a result, he has to budget his money carefully.
