Achieving Sentence Variety

A piece of writing that contains a string of sentences with the same basic pattern often seems boring. Your writing will be more interesting if you use a variety of sentence lengths and sentence patterns. Experiment. Break the habit of using only sentences that follow the normal subject-verb-object pattern. Study the following groups of sentences.

Many people came to the polls. They were eager to vote. They didn’t mind the long lines.

These sentences are of the same length and contain the same basic pattern. They’re boring.

Eager to vote, many people came to the polls. The long lines didn’t bother them.
