Avoiding Slang, Jargon

Slang is full of colorful, lively expressions and novel meanings that are understood by a certain group of people who associate with one another. For example, teenagers often speak a slang language that is not understood completely by their parents. Of course, such language is appropriate for conversations. However, it should be avoided in academic writing.

Jargon is a technical form of slang. For example, musicians, skateboarders, surfers, and computer hackers use jargon related specifically to their profession or activity. Like slang, jargon should be avoided in academic writing.
