Commas in Special Cases

Use a comma between the day and the year in a date. Use a comma after the year in a date when it appears in the middle of a sentence, as shows in this example:

My father was born on July 16, 1952, in St. Louis.

Use commas to separate street addresses, cities, states, and countries. Use a comma after a specific address or geographical location when it appears in the middle of a sentence, as shown in the following example:

Miami University is in Oxford, Ohio, even though it sounds as if it should be in Florida.

Use commas to separate proper names from titles or degrees:

Juanita Rendon, Ph.D., has been elected to replace Bill Carpenter, Personnel Director.

Finally, use commas to separate a direct quotation from a speaker tag, as shown in these examples:

The officer shouted, “You’re under arrest!”
“I’m innocent,” replied the thief.
