

Jürgen Habermas completed his doctoral thesis on Schelling at the University of Bonn in 1954. Early in his career he was philosophy was Heideggerian, but from 1956 to 1959, he studied with Theodore Adorno at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research. After teaching at the universities of Heidelberg and Frankfurt, he was appointed director of the Max
Planck Institute in 1971. In 1984, he returned to the University of Frankfurt, where he serves as the Distinguished Professor of Philosophy.
