Word Meanings

Even when commentators on Aristotle's thought agree on a particular meaning, a commentator may still alert you to how an important word should be understood. For instance, the commentator may warn you that for the Greek people of Aristotle's era the term 'eudaimonia', though translated as 'happiness', has a connotation of an activity of overall well being over time, not some temporary state or feeling of pleasure as we tend to conceive of happiness. Further, the commentator will leave unsaid many issues considered uncontroversial in how most terms are handled. So, when reading Aristotle, be aware that a translation is, in important ways, already interpreted. If you are quite interested in Aristotle, you may want to consider several alternative translations, as well as commentators' analysis of Aristotle's work. This brings up an important point concerning reading work about Aristotle.
