Introduction

Most academic disciplines have their own language—a set of specialized words and phrases that have very specific meanings within the field. For example, in Literature courses you will probably encounter words such as similes, metaphors, denouement. In biology, however, you will most likely learn about herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.

Knowing the meanings of these course-specific words will help you more fully comprehend the material that you are learning and will be tested on. These academic vocabulary exercises will introduce you to some of the key terms used in college courses. You will also find these words helpful in everyday life and in the workplace.
