Introduction

Welcome!

The Companion Website for From Idea to Essay, 10e, has been designed with the needs of YOUR composition course in mind.

While it is a noble endeavor, the teaching of writing can be demanding. The resources on this Web Site will, we hope, help to make your job a little easier.

YOUR STUDENTS will discover on this site features that complement and supplement the material in each chapter of From Idea to Essay:

  • LEARNING OBJECTIVES briefly review the material in each chapter.
  • ESSAY QUESTIONS help your students to continue to sharpen their writing.

People learn to write by actually writing. These activities (three per chapter) give your students additional writing opportunities and allow them to explore some of the concepts and ideas presented in the text.

  • EDITING ACTIVITES enable your students to practice revising.

Drafting is sometimes easy. Revising never is. These activities (three per chapter) give your students additional practice at perhaps the most important part of writing: reworking. By completing these activities, students will be able to hone their revising, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • REVIEW QUESTIONS test your students' understanding of the material.

Five multiple-choice and five true-false questions for each chapter allow you to quickly determine whether your students have mastered the content of From Idea to Essay.

  • WEB LINKS give your students more information about skills and topics covered.

For each chapter, three Web links will take your students to sites that offer information that reinforces the material offered in From Idea to Essay.

In addition, this Companion Web Site offers you resources that will help you to develop yourself professionally.

  • WEB LINKS connect you with professional organizations, OWLS, online magazines, and other resources that can enable you to hone your teaching.
  • SAMPLE SYLLABI give you ideas that can help you to use the text more effectively in your classroom.

Again, welcome!

We hope that this Companion Website helps to make your use of From Idea to Essay more rewarding—for both you and your students.
