Why should you mark and highlight the important information in your textbooks? College students have a great deal of reading every week. Without a system for highlighting and marking, much of the information would have to be reread in order to locate this information quickly and review it effectively for an exam. Successful studying requires both a system for marking and a system for highlighting. Highlighting makes the important information stand out for easy review, while marking comprises marginal notes, summary words, and symbols that indicate the relationship between facts and ideas. Highlighting keeps the learner physically active (thinking, evaluating, organizing, and monitoring understanding). This topic area covers all of the above for highlighting and marking textbooks effectively, and contains demonstrations and practice exercises for learning these skills. Also included are ways to test whether your textbook markings emphasize the important information. (Corresponds to material covered in Chapter 11 in College Reading and Study Skills and Chapter 8 in Academic Reading.)
