Efficiency and flexibility are crucial to fluent reading. This chapter provides information on how these elements affect the reader's ability to accomplish reading tasks effectively. In addition, the characteristics and circumstances that affect reading rate and comprehension are discussed along with the importance of varying reading rate according to the type of material that is read. Exercises for establishing purpose and reading speed are provided.
