Vocabulary knowledge is very closely connected to reading comprehension. In this chapter you will learn techniques for expanding your vocabulary. Context clues such as definition, example, contrast, and inference clues are discussed and exercises are provided for practice. Lists of common prefixes, suffixes, and roots are also included along with exercises for analyzing words through these word parts. Other vocabulary building strategies such as the use of index card systems, and reference sources (dictionaries and thesauruses) are presented with practice exercises. In addition, instruction on sharpening word meanings, such as distinguishing between denotative and connotative word meanings and figurative language is given.
