Chapter Summary

Understanding the main point of a selection starts with the ability to identify the topic, the main idea and the structural patterns of a paragraph. This chapter outlines the three essential elements of a paragraph: the topic, the main idea, the supporting details, and the transitional words that connect the flow of meaning from paragraph to paragraph. An explanation is also given for locating the main point when it is not expressly stated in the topic sentence. Major and minor details are discussed in terms of four types: (1) illustrations and examples; (2) facts and statistics; (3) reasons; and (4) descriptions.

Exercises are provided for identifying the topic, finding the main idea, finding unstated main ideas, locating the topic sentence, recognizing the supporting details, and understanding transitions.
