Building Vocabulary: Using Context Clues
When you read a sentence or paragraph the words that are familiar to you provide clues to help you figure out any unknown words. In this chapter, explanations for recognizing these context clues are given along with exercises to practice identifying the meaning of new words without looking them up in a dictionary. The different types of context clues discussed are definition clues, example clues, contrast clues, and inference clues.
Additional practice exercises are given for identifying context clues. They include three practice tests, two mastery texts, and one reading selection with several vocabulary skills exercises.
