Recognizing Basic Patterns of Organization

What are patterns of organization? Writers use a variety of organizational patterns to present their ideas. They follow a clear pattern when they write so that readers can easily follow and understand the main points. In this chapter you will learn how to recognize the following patterns: (1) example, (2) definition, (3) chronological order, (4) process order, (5) listing, and (6) mixed patterns. Explanations, examples, and visual diagrams are provided for each of these patterns along with exercises for practice in recognizing them.

Explanations, examples, and practice exercises are also provided for recognizing that are commonly associated with each type of pattern. Additional practice is given for identifying the various types of patterns when they are mixed together in the same paragraphs.
