Chapter 9: Recognizing...
Chapter Summary
|
Recognizing Comparison/Contrast and Cause/Effect Patterns
Writers often use the comparison and contrast pattern in paragraphs and in longer writings to help explain how items, people, or events are alike and different. Cause/effect patterns are used to explain why an event or action causes another event or action. In this chapter explanations, examples, and practice exercises are provided for recognizing these two types of organizational patterns.
Common transitions are listed for each pattern along with discussions on how they signal the type of pattern used. Practice exercises along with three tests, three mastery tests, and a reading with cumulative review questions are provided.
