Understanding Sentences
Chapter Summary

The sentences in college-level textbooks are more complex than more general types of reading. This chapter will show you how to: (1) analyze sentences for meaning, (2) understand sentences that contain several ideas, and (3) paraphrase a sentence. More specifically, you will learn how to locate key ideas, study the modifiers, check unknown words, and use your own words to express ideas. You will also learn how to identify the subject and the predicate in sentences and identify both coordinating and subordinating ideas within sentences.

Exercises and mastery tests will give you the opportunity to apply the sentence combining and paraphrasing techniques presented in this chapter.
