Following the Author's Thought Patterns
Chapter Summary

Authors arrange paragraph information into specific patterns so readers can easily follow their train of thought. In this chapter you will learn how to recognize six common paragraph patterns: (1) illustration/example, (2) definition, (3) comparison/contrast, (4) cause/effect, (5) classification, and (6) chronological order (time order)/ process. You will also learn five other textbook patterns used in academic writing: (1) statement and clarification, (2) summary, (3) generalization and example, (4) addition, and (5) spatial order. The characteristics or these patterns are discussed along with the transitional words that signal them.

Examples, exercises, and mastery tests will give you the opportunity to study and apply the strategies presented in this chapter for recognizing common paragraph patterns used in textbooks.
