Chapter Summary

Textbooks have a very specific organization. This chapter will show you how to use textbook learning aids, follow the organization of textbook chapters, and read technical material. More specifically, you will learn how to read and use the various parts of a textbook including the (1) preface, (2) forward to the student, (3) opening chapter, (4) topographical aids, (5) discussion questions, (6) vocabulary lists, (7) glossary, (8) headings, and (9) sub-headings. You will also learn how to make use of the features that distinguish technical material. These include: (1) fact density, (2) specialized vocabulary, (3) abbreviations and notations, (4) drawings and illustrations, and (5) the examples and sample problems.

Examples, exercises, and mastery tests will give you the opportunity to study and apply the strategies presented in this chapter for understanding the organization of textbooks and reading technical material.
