About the Authors

Dr. Kathleen T. McWhorter has been a Professor of Humanities at Niagara County Community College in western New York for 29 years. She is affiliated with a number of professional organizations, including the National Council of Teachers of English, the New York State Learning Skills Association, the National Association of Developmental Educators, and The College Reading and Learning Association. Her areas of specialization include developmental reading, developmental writing, and learning and study skills.

Dr. McWhorter enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband, daughter, two grandchildren, and two golden retrievers. Her hobbies include jogging, taking long walks on the beach, traveling, and gourmet cooking. She plans to add horseback riding to this list in the near future, so she can keep up with her granddaughter, who has been riding since she was 4.

Dr. McWhorter is also the author of Guide to College Reading, the best-selling companion volumes to Academic Reading, Study and Critical Thinking Skills in College, and College Reading and Study Skills, a unique integration of study and thinking skills, helping students achieve college success.

Gretchen Starks-Martin has a doctorate degree in higher education from Syracuse University and a master's degree in reading from Western Michigan University. She has taught reading and writing over 30 years at the community college, technical college, and university levels. She has been involved in developmental education as President of the New York College Learning Skills Association and the Minnesota Association of Developmental Education and most recently as Treasurer of the College Reading and Learning Association. Publications and professional development have dealt with retention of students and using technology in developmental education.
