Chapter Summary

Your reading rate depends upon the type of material you are reading. In this chapter, you will find out how to improve your reading rate and how to adjust your rate to meet comprehension demands. Some suggestions for improving reading rate include (a) making a conscious effort to read faster, (b) previewing new material, (c) eliminating distractions, (d) staying alert, and (e) setting time goals.

Advice for adjusting your reading rate includes (1) assessing the difficulty of the assignment, (2) assessing your interest and familiarity with the material, (3) defining your purpose, and (4) determining required follow-up activities.
