Exercise 3

Essays are composed of three elements: an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Body paragraphs should support the thesis statement and main points of the essay. Each body paragraph should contain the following: 1) a topic sentence that introduces the main point of the paragraph, 2) discussion or elaboration of the point in the writer’s own words, 3) an example or further description of what the author is talking about, and 4) a concluding sentence that restates the paragraph’s main point. One important thing to remember in composing body paragraphs is logic. Be sure to move from point to point in a precise way so that your reader has no trouble in following your train of thought. Don’t be afraid to add an extra sentence to further your discussion and increase your overall effect on the reader. Following this formula should help unify and structure your body paragraphs and essay in general.
