I have often heard my grandparents refer to taking a Cooks Tour when they take a short trip, if they want to getaway for a long weekend, or a holiday. I often wondered where the term came from, so I looked it up. The term actually refers to brief tours conducted by Mr. Thomas Cook of Great Britain in the mid 1800s. Before this time, travel had been a luxury reserved for the rich, the class of people who had plenty of leisure, and the educated. But Cook brought travel to the masses. His tours were open to carpenters, clerks, nurses, and also allowed were shopkeepers. For a reasonable price, a middle-class traveler could book a complete package. Cook took the worry out of buying railroad tickets, he made hotel reservations, arrangements for meals were made by him, and securing entrance to museums and other tourist attractions. His employees even provided medical advice.
