Summary

Definitions explain a single term (like “love”) or a short phrase (like “American patriotism”) either because they are unfamiliar to the reader, or because they can be interpreted several different ways. Try to avoid using dictionary definitions, relying instead on specific examples and synonyms (words with similar meanings) to help your reader understand. You should also explain how you are using the term and what it means to you.

Most extended definitions begin with an introductory paragraph that defines the term or phrase in your own words. The body of the essay should include specific examples, facts, or narratives that expand on your definition. You may also use contrast as a way to define what your term or phrase is, as well as what it is not. You may also want to explain things in terms of their origins and evolution.

Remember that your goal is to write a clear, well organized definition so that your reader understands the term or phrase as well as its meaning to you or to society in general.
