Barbara Ehrenreich
Barbara Ehrenreich is by training a research biologist who holds a Ph.D. in that area. Her earliest writings were academic pieces required in her profession. Her move from academic to professional writer came about gradually, resulting first from her realizing that she was more interested in being a social activist than a biologist. She contends, however, that her academic background, particularly her analytical and technical strengths, have given her an advantage as a popular writer.

Ehrenreich is now recognized as a political essayist and social critic who speaks and writes about a wide range of subjects, from poverty to inequality to capital punishment. Her topics come from two areas: things that anger her and things that she is curious about. She concludes that these areas provide her with "a lot of material." Although the author attempts to maintain an objective journalistic style, she admits that keeping her political views from influencing her work is difficult. When she feels that her writing is becoming too politically charged, she resorts to using humor, particularly satire, to present her views.

Barbara Ehrenreich's Web page includes links to downloadable articles and commentary.

One of the most useful Ehrenreich sites is her page on The Well. It includes brief biographical information followed by a categorized listing of her most popular and/or controversial writings. In addition, the site includes a limited number of reviews of her work.

Further biographical information about Barbara Ehrenreich, framed as an interview, can be located on the Literary Nonfiction Web site at the University of Oregon.
