Making the public aware of the gender differences in the way language is a particular concern for Tannen. To promote this awareness, she presents lectures internationally, appearing before groups as diverse as small private gatherings to academic settings to businesses to the United States Senate—and, of course, to the media. Her work is available by audio and video recordings as well as collected in popular bestsellers such as You Just Don't Understand, Talking from 9 to 5: Women and Mean at Work, and I Only Say This Because I Love You: Talking to Your Parents, Partner, Sibs, and Kids When You're All Adults.
In addition to her academic and public work, Tannen also writes poetry, short stories, personal essays, and plays.
Tannen's Web page at Georgetown includes her photograph, biographical material, and bibliographical reviews. In addition, excerpts from interviews about both her own work and her reactions to current events are collected. Finally, addresses for contacting her by e-mail or post are included.
