Deborah Tannen

Deborah Tannen is a prolific author who has published 19 books and more than 100 articles. Her work is collected in texts used in a range of studies, including linguistics, critical thinking, sociology, behavioral sciences, and English. A linguistics professor at Georgetown University, Dr. Tannen's area of expertise is conversational differences between males and females. Gender uses of language, she believes, result in misunderstandings that too often separate rather than bind the sexes.

Making the public aware of the gender differences in the way language is a particular concern for Tannen. To promote this awareness, she presents lectures internationally, appearing before groups as diverse as small private gatherings to academic settings to businesses to the United States Senate—and, of course, to the media. Her work is available by audio and video recordings as well as collected in popular bestsellers such as You Just Don't Understand, Talking from 9 to 5: Women and Mean at Work, and I Only Say This Because I Love You: Talking to Your Parents, Partner, Sibs, and Kids When You're All Adults.

In addition to her academic and public work, Tannen also writes poetry, short stories, personal essays, and plays.

Tannen's Web page at Georgetown includes her photograph, biographical material, and bibliographical reviews. In addition, excerpts from interviews about both her own work and her reactions to current events are collected. Finally, addresses for contacting her by e-mail or post are included.

Deborah Tannen's Washington Post column responds to readers' questions about statements that have been made to them. The author's responses provide insight into her communication theories that have guided her professional work.
