Chapter Objectives
Chapter 5 looks at the use of examples and illustrations as a means of developing ideas and concepts that are general or vague. This use of examples and illustrations is called exemplification. This particular writing strategy is essential to good writing of any kind. As with all other patterns for developing an essay, the exemplification pattern in an essay should be developed with the audience and purpose in mind. In order for an audience to relate to an example, it must be based on common ground. Exemplification is a method for development that is used in all types of essays. Examples are useful ways to persuade readers to think or act in a new way; they are critical in causal analysis; they help prevent ambiguity by providing a concrete illustration of something more general or abstract; and they make an essay more interesting to read.
