When she describes the present, she presents the examples in flashes of images evoked by detail and bits of dialogue. The effect created is that of a fractured society where small girls can have brain tumors. She presents her past in larger paragraphs, arranged chronologically, creating a sense that society was more stable, more orderly. The examples she gives, however, of divorce, loss of jobs, death, and drugs belie the normalcy suggested by the structure of these paragraphs. How effective is this strategy in fulfilling the purpose of the writer?

Barbara Ehrenreich's tone in "What I've Learned from Men" is humorous. She argues that women are "too nice" and too "ladylike." From her examples, she concludes that women lack "the aura of power and control." To prove her point, she also uses examples of men's behaviors as a counterpoint to the examples of women's behaviors. Is this an effective use of examples? Do the examples illustrate her purpose well? Explain.
