This activity contains 1 question.
Amalgamation is the trend for municipal governments these days, ever growing and expanding to swallow up adjacent counties and towns. Proponents argue that combining government services and bureaucracies, the quality and level of services improve, the region is better positioned for economic competition, and money is saved. Five years or more after studies done in amalgamated municipalities suggest, however, that these beneficial effects have not materialized. The number of people opposed to amalgamation had grown. Reporting that they felt the quality and level of services, such as libraries and road repair, had stayed the same or worsened since amalgamation. No financial advantage was reported by either citizens or governments, many of whom saw their property taxes increase. Residents from rural areas were particularly dissatisfied. Feeling cut off from their local government and bereft of their former community identity. With a majority of those polled favoring the idea of holding a referendum to undo the amalgamation.
