Chapter 1 emphasizes the connection between reading and writing and outlines a process for reading that will assist the student in reading more efficiently and with greater ease. The process, which consists of three major steps, can be applied to any reading task. The process includes the following steps or stages:

1. Get an overview of the selection.
2. Deepen your sense of the selection by reading critically and annotating the text.
3. Evaluate the selection.
